Brazilian Pride goes global in Fashion
The last thing I expected to see upon walking into an Urban Outfitters was a slew of baby tees and jerseys with “BRASIL” plastered across the front in bold letters. I picked one up, remembering the ones I used to own as a kid, particularly one that was bright green and had glitter covered letters. I grew up going to schools with little to no other Brazilians, and had been mortified to wear these shirts out in public. Seeing them suddenly overwhelm my feed filled me with pride and nostalgia, along with a tinge of regret for not embracing my heritage in my preteen years.
Brazil’s influence has always been around, but has only recently come to the forefront of the internet’s attention. Besides the rise in Brazilian tees all over my Pinterest, Kanye sampled funk, a Brazilian music genre, in his most recent album, and bossa nova has been adopted more and more often in indie music. Blokecore, a style that implements jerseys and sportswear into everyday looks, most often utilizes Brazil’s soccer jerseys. These trends only continue to pick up steam, so if you’re looking to stay ahead of the curve, there are some Brazilian creators who can help you with that.
