And the BRIT Award for Best Dressed Goes to…

February is the time of the year when celebrities get to show off a variety of over-the-top, high-end garments on several red carpets. You’d think that after the Grammy Awards last week, they would be all out of ideas. However, the opposite was true. The BRIT Awards on Saturday night was host to very elaborate looks, shall we say. From inflatable latex to barely-there dresses, there was no shortage of celebrities trying to outdo one another on the fashion scale and some were more successful than others.

Of course, this wouldn’t be a fashion review if we didn’t talk about the aptly named Mr. Styles himself. It’s safe to say that Harry served with his look. Despite not sporting his usual Gucci or sequins, Harry’s all-black ensemble gave us an exaggerated 70s flare. His trademark silhouette of flared trousers and a suit jacket was elevated by the addition of a wide peplum and the biggest rosette you have ever, and probably will ever, see in your life. This Nina Ricci look meant business with flare and it was certainly a fitting outfit for someone with the title of Artist of the Year.

How stunning is this dress? Jodie Turner-Smith sauntered onto the red carpet looking like some kind of Greek goddess. Her confident posture makes the dress seem even more divine. There were an awful lot of figure-hugging dresses this year, but I dare you to find one as gorgeous as this. The material clings to her body shape perfectly and the drape is nothing short of magical. This Zuhair Murad outfit is the perfect shade of gold and the light-catching cape sure does make a statement on the red carpet.

Bimini Bon-Boulash

Bimini’s tribute to the late Vivienne Westwood could not have been any more chic. In Britain’s society today, it could be considered controversial to publicly don a massive Union Jack flag but in traditional Westwood fashion, it’s not a symbol of patriotism, it’s a symbol of rebellion. Bimini’s paired down 90s style hair and makeup ensures all the attention is on the dress and naturally, a Westwood dress couldn’t possibly be worn without a pair of massive platform shoes.

Now, I know what you may be thinking, this isn’t much of a red carpet look, but rather an outfit more suited to a costume party perhaps. But that is what makes Megan Mckenna’s get-up so fabulous. I mean, let’s face it, no one else wore cowboy boots and a Stetson. It was totally original! And what’s more Megan really suited the whole aesthetic of it. The leather dress and gloves combined with the diamond detail moves the outfit away from tacky costume and towards awards show ready.

Eliza Rose

And here we have yet another Vivienne Westwood piece making it on to the list, with Bimini not being the only celeb to pay tribute to the late and great designer. For this look, Eliza has played on Westwood’s historical tendencies by sporting a regency hair-do and a pearl necklace and bag which contrast beautifully with the lace tights and risqué hemline. Rose is certainly giving us alternative princess vibes!

Cara Amfo

So, we have a lot to unpack with this look. To start with the positives, the colour is stunning on her and it looks like it’s made of velvet which will be why the train drapes so nicely. On the other hand, it seems very understated for an awards show, but maybe it just seems that way because so many others went overboard. Cara’s look could have been so much more dramatic if the train was a little bit bigger or even if the silhouette was over-exaggerated in places.

Billie Piper

This is one of those looks that just really doesn’t work. In fact, it looks like Roberto Cavalli has just mashed three different outfits together. Sure, the top and sleeves are stunning on their own but, instead of the leggings, the outfit could do with a long skirt, perhaps in the same fabric as the sleeves. What do you think of this look?

Salma Hayek

Ever wondered what you look like when you tie your leather jacket around your waist? Well, this is it. All jokes aside, this dress suits Salma Hayek sooo well and the high-low hem is stunning! In typical Alexander McQueen fashion, black leather has been manipulated into something feminine without losing its edge. You could mistake the leather for satin with its waterfall-like drape. A truly sculptural piece that hugs Salma’s figure like a dream.

Iris Law

The early 00s called, they want their red carpet looks back. For an awards show night, it’s a pretty simple look. Each individual article of clothing looks good but together, it just doesn’t seem to fit the brief. It can be understood that Iris was perhaps going for a ‘less is more’ vibe but in this case, less really is just less. Maybe if the skirt was in a different colour other than grey, it might make more of a statement. On the other hand, the simple chain going right down Iris’ torso is an incredibly effective and understated piece of jewellery and a good choice of accessory for this simple look.

Sam Smith

No words can describe how truly unique this piece by Harri is and I honestly don’t think anyone was prepared for Sam Smith to wear this to the BRIT Awards. It’s as far away from Cara Amfo’s little black dress as you can physically get. Inflatable latex was definitely not on the fashion predictions radar, that’s for sure. It’s a look that’s reminiscent of that David Bowie jumpsuit designed by Kansai Yamamoto, but it’s brought into the future in a way that probably never occurred to either Bowie or Yamamoto. 100/10 for originality!
