Etiquette When Going to Events

It's always exciting to get invited to an event no matter how simple or grand. Your presence, however, isn't all that matters - each event has its own attire. You can't go to a wedding in a t-shirt and shorts, and you can't go to a BBQ in a full on suit or gown; it just doesn't go with the theme of the soiree or event. Sometimes people dress a certain way, not knowing that their outfit doesn’t go with the theme of the occasion. With any luck, I can help shed some light for those who aren’t sure of what to wear when going to the following:

  1. Birthday Party

Depending on whose party it is and where it's taking place, you would usually wear something casual to a birthday party. A nice shirt and pants or a skirt would be suffice. If the invitation says otherwise, dress accordingly. If you don't want to dress that way, don't go.

2. Graduation party

Graduation festivities are usually dressy casual. That means you're not wearing a ball gown but you're also not looking like you're going to a barbecue either. For the ladies: a dress shirt and skirt or a shirt and nice pants would be appropriate. For the men: a button down shirt and slacks.

3. Weddings

Weddings are a beautiful, formal occasion. Men and women should wear their "Sunday best," or in other words, the spiffiest outfit in their closet.

4. First Holy Communion

Like a wedding, you should be dressed in the same manner for a Holy Communion.

IMPORTANT: no matter the occasion, you clothes should be properly ironed and presentable for the festivities.
