Head back to school in fashion

When my parents first allowed me to dress myself, I was in a youthful daze that resulted in outfits with chaotic color schemes and eclectic mixtures of patterns. But now that I am entering college, my going back to school fashion has greatly changed. I now consider my style to be something unique that I call ‘preppy-punk.’ Blair Waldorf still holds a special place in my heart, but being fully put together as she often is wouldn’t be my personal style. I adore my uniqueness. I crave being set apart. But more than that, I thrive on a few doses of chaotic fashion. My fashion isn’t flawless. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not running around with tears in my tights or threads on my dresses. But I like something slightly untucked, an effortless way of being.

In high school, my clothing had so heavily dictated my life. People often assumed that because of how I dressed, I was the teacher’s pet, the little angel. And without completely wrecking my reputation, I’d say that isn’t completely true. By creating a preppy look with a few grunge twists such as chunky silver jewelry, combat boots, or other unexpected items, you can create a look that is uniquely your own. This is my plan as I go back to school, to create outfits that, even from a distance, someone can say, “that is so Sydney!”

As with many people going back to school (or even those who are just heading into work), finding your sense of style can be tricky. And while I could go on for pages about discovering my own personal style, that wouldn’t be helpful to you!

Finding your color palette

When looking to find your personal color palette there are the options to do it yourself on Youtube or to simply take an online quiz. Others might seek out a professional in their area, which can be a great option, if not more expensive! Now, as you start to ask why finding your color palette is so crucial it’s simply because it allows you to narrow down different ways that you can dress.

Finding your wardrobe staples

For Fashion on the Beat, I’ve covered wardrobe staples for celebrities such as Doja Cat, Ariana Grande, and Marilyn Monroe. Each person seemingly has a go-to look, something that they can easily slip on and make their own. Finding this for yourself can take time. Simply notice the things you gravitate towards and items that you pick up, even if you put them back down. Everyone has ‘basics’ that simply make sense for them, whether it’s a basic white button-up or a sequin mini skirt.
