Rompy is the destination for safe sex wellness
Rompy is a one-stop destination for all things intimacy, but from the comfortable and forward-thinking perspective of Gen Zers. Created by two sisters with the goal of “revolutionizing the conversation around sex and intimacy”, Rompy’s products range from dad caps to vibrators, and their articles discuss everything from making friendships in your 20s to a tutorial on using a bullet vibrator. Being raised by a mother who encouraged a casual approach instead of awkward sit-downs or completely avoidant attitudes, Blakely and Savannah knew that they could make the most of their upbringing by making the conversation around sex informative, fun, and comfortable for young people. Rompy embodies a unique approach to sex and wellness education, worth exploring and promoting among the younger generations.
Where did the idea of Rompy come from and what made you want to move forward with it?
Our mom believed in the power of “200 one-minute conversations” versus the big, daunting (and horrifying!) “birds and the bees” talk. We only realized how unique and transformative this approach was when we went to college and quickly noticed how many young adults did not have this same opportunity. We thought to ourselves that there should be a destination for young adults to come together, ask questions, share experiences, and shop for products. There is undoubtedly a need for warm, approachable, and fun education and conversations within the world of sexual wellness and intimacy, so our hope for Rompy is to be a destination for young adults so that they can feel empowered, confident, and excited.
I love the idea of making conversations around sex and intimacy fun. What was the process like in the decision to take this approach?
There is so much heaviness, shame, and stigma surrounding topics like sex, intimacy, and pleasure. We sought out to be the antidote to this by infusing the space with light, playfulness, and fun. Adolescence should be such a fun time—you are experiencing new things, growing your confidence, learning to understand your body, and so much more. Even the name “Rompy” was very intentional—it means “Playfully Adventurous,” which is one of our North Stars in everything that we do as a brand.
What are some challenges you face as a wellness brand that focuses on sex?
We are well aware of the fact that we chose to build a brand around one of the most heavily-stigmatized topics there is. The guidelines on all social media platforms reflect this age-old stigma and shame, so even just getting our content out there and viewed by our followers is a challenge—let alone reaching new audiences. Also, we understand that not everyone is ready or eager to hop on the “sexual wellness” bandwagon, even if it’s just following our page on Instagram. Everyone arrives to us with different backgrounds, beliefs, and understandings around sex and intimacy, so we do our best to be a welcoming destination, while also recognizing that not everyone is ready to join the Rompy world—and that’s ok!
What is the ultimate goal of Rompy?
Our overarching goal and mission with Rompy is to be a wellness destination for young adults. We want to be that safe place to land—the place where you can ask your embarrassing questions, or where you can meet others who share the same values as you, or where you can shop for merchandise that conveys a playful and empowering message. Sexual wellness is a huge piece of this puzzle, because there is a huge lack of open and approachable information and conversations. But because our perspective of sexual wellness is so broad and all-encompassing, Rompy’s mission extends far beyond the bedroom. We can’t wait to keep becoming a source for education, community, and storytelling among the young adult generation.
Do you have any events, new products, or exciting projects planned?
We host our community, who we call the “Rompers,” on a platform called TYB. One of our goals in the coming months is to fully co-create, build, and launch a product with this community. As for what the product is, you’ll have to join to find out! Aside from product, we are excited to begin scaling the Rompy Text Hotline, which we piloted last month. Every few weeks, we bring on a “host” to answer the questions that our community will text in. We have a breathwork facilitator, a sex educator, and a cognitive behavioral therapist coming on as hosts over the next few months! The questions that we have received so far have been incredibly thoughtful, provocative, and vulnerable, so we can’t wait to keep serving our community through this format.
