Afrofuturism in fashion, designed and built by no sesso
It’s officially September, and though fall is around the corner, the weather is heating up– as is the fashion. The first official day of New York Fashion Week started off strong with a lineup of dynamic and diverse labels showcasing their Spring/Summer 2023 lines, which notably includes the hot newer brand to watch: No Sesso.
No Sesso, the genderless fashion brand as denoted by the Italian name, has had quite a fruitful year so far. Coming off of a successful collaboration with Levi’s, a spot in the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund 2022 Finalists, and now a fresh new line debuting at NYFW 2022, No Sesso is on a roll with no end in sight. LA-based designers of the brand Pia Davis and Autumn Randolph continue to push the envelope of what it really means to be progressive and inclusive in the fashion sphere from the brand's inception in 2015, and this new line is no exception.
“No Sesso sexy’ meets Afrofuturism” is how the pair described the new line when asked by HighSnobiety, and it does not fall short of the description. From the hair down to the nails, the styling paired with the clothes gives fun, edgy, bold, and undeniable “it-girl” energy to every model walking down that runway. The gravity-defying hairstyles, long acrylics, and dark-hued makeup set the futuristic grunge aesthetic off seamlessly. A switch up from the textile blends with pops of color from the fall line, spring comes with darker tones and light textures.
A large stand-out for me was the incorporation of sexy cutouts, asymmetrical layers, and a blend of textures. Some shimmer here and there, straps, and gathered material bring so much dimension and excitement to the pieces which are sure to elevate any look. Click here for a few looks from No Sesso SS23.
